President's Address

It was great to see so many of you at our annual conference in December, at the University of Canterbury. Our annual conference is strong in numbers and it is fantastic to experience such a good vibe in our community. Thanks to our gracious host, the University of Canterbury, and our conference co-chairs, Associate Professors Jörg Finsterwalder, Sussie Morrish, and Dr Girish Prayag and the Doctoral Colloquium chairs Professor Paul Ballantine and Associate Professor Ekant Veer, for the great conference. On behalf of ANZMAC, I would like to congratulate to all ANZMAC award winners. The conference proceedings and photos are available online.

The ANZMAC conference is members’ prime opportunity to meet up and network, but our Academy contributes to other academic events. Last year our Academy successfully hosted and co-chaired the Global Marketing Conference in Hong-Kong and the ANZMAC-KSMS Symposium in Seoul, thanks to the help of Professors Ian Phau (Curtin University) and Sharyn Rundle-Thiele (Griffith University).

In addition to the long-established end of year doctoral colloquium, the ANZMAC mid-year doctoral colloquium has become an established platform for young scholars to present their work to esteemed mentors from our community. Last year, Curtin University (Co-Chairs Professors Ian Phau and Nigel de Bussy) did a tremendous job hosting this event. This year Associate Professor Krzysztof Kubacki and Dr Denni Arli will be organising the mid-year doctoral colloquium, with a great line-up of esteemed speakers and mentors. Information about the event and the call for papers will be sent out later this month.

The Executive Committee (EC) worked hard last year to explore ways in which we can create value for our community. In addition to continuing with the tradition of the mid-year doctoral colloquium, last year the EC met seventeen ANZMAC institutional members and published a Green Paper. Subsequently, we consulted extensively at last year’s conference, and currently a final, White Paper is being prepared and will be published soon (see brief note from the Strategic Review Committee below). Furthermore, ANZMAC has recently acquired a state-of-the-art membership management system, which allows our members to create and manage their own membership profiles, and register for events. As marketing academics, I am sure you will appreciate the EC’s commitment to learning about our members’ activities and interests in order to create more and valuable opportunities for our community.

The 2017 ANZMAC Strategy Challenge is about to start. Thank you to the seven teams who have signed up and to our two organisers Drs Gavin Northey and Rebecca Dolan (University of Auckland) for creating and managing this Challenge. In the upcoming months, we shall look forward to our game makers’ (Gavin and Rebecca) updates on how the competition unfolds.

Last, but certainly not least – following the EC elections last year, the membership remains almost the same, with one exception. Professor Suzan Burton (Western Sydney University), whose work as a treasurer has been invaluable to the committee, has stepped down. On behalf of ANZMAC, I would like to thank her for her contribution to the ANZMAC community.

Strategic Review White paper

The Strategic Review White paper is being prepared for the next executive meeting based on feedback on the Green Paper at the ANZMAC conference. Various initiatives stemming from this report are also being worked on, including setting SIGS and that a working committee to progress the development of SIGs chaired by Yelena has been established.  Other initiatives are also being developed.

AMJ Special Issue

There is an upcoming Special issue for AMJ, “Empirically based Marketing Knowledge,” guest edited by Rachel Kennedy and Cathy Nguyen of the Ehrenberg Institute at the University of South Australia. Closing date 31st July, 2017.
